Privacy Policy
FairValueAnchor ("we", "us") runs FairValueAnchor, a website that turns companies' public SEC filings into financial analysis. This policy explains what we collect when you use it, why, how long we keep it, and the choices you have.
- To use FairValueAnchor you don't need an account. If you create one, we keep your email address and little else.
- Payments go through Stripe. We never see or store your card number.
- We count which companies are looked up so we can improve the data. For visitors who aren't signed in, we do that with an identifier we can't trace back to you, and it changes every day.
- We don't sell your personal information.
- Free pages may show Google ads, which use cookies. Pro subscribers see none.
What we collect
Your account
If you sign in, we keep your email address, when the account was created, and when you last signed in. That address is how we recognise you; it's the only thing we need to run your account.
- Sign in with Google. Google tells us your email address, whether Google has verified it, and an identifier for your Google account, which we don't keep. We ask Google for nothing else — not your name, photo, contacts or files — and Google never shares your password with us.
- Sign in with an emailed link (where offered). We send a one-time link to your address. We store only a scrambled (hashed) form of it, along with the IP address that asked for it so we can stop people flooding inboxes, and we delete both about a day after the link expires.
Subscriptions and payments
Pro subscriptions are processed by Stripe. You enter your payment details on Stripe's page, not ours: we never receive or store your card number. Stripe tells us, and we keep, your Stripe customer and subscription identifiers, your subscription's status, and when the current paid period ends. We give Stripe your email address so it can send your receipts.
How you use FairValueAnchor
When you look up a company, run a screen or view a page, we record what you looked up, when, whether it succeeded, how long it took, and whether you were on the free or Pro plan. If you're signed in, it's linked to your account.
If you're not signed in, it's linked instead to a visitor identifier made by scrambling (hashing) your IP address and browser type with a secret key that changes every day. We can't reverse it to recover your IP address, and the same visitor gets a different identifier the next day. We don't keep your IP address with these records.
Counting free lookups
The free plan includes 5 company lookups a day. If you're signed in, we count them against your account. If not, we count them against your IP address, together with which companies you've already opened that day (so reopening one doesn't count twice). These records are deleted after 7 days.
Cookies
| Cookie | Purpose | Kept for |
|---|---|---|
| Session (ours) | Keeps you signed in, and briefly holds the security checks used while you sign in with Google. It's signed, so it can't be tampered with. FairValueAnchor can't work without it. | Up to 30 days |
| Advertising (Google) | Free pages only, when ads are on. See Advertising. | Set by Google |
We don't use cookies for our own analytics; the usage records above are kept on our servers.
Technical data
Like any website, ours runs on infrastructure that sees your IP address and browser details as it delivers each page. Our hosting provider and our database provider process this on our behalf and may keep it in network and security logs under their own policies. We don't configure our own servers to keep request logs.
What we don't do
- We don't sell your personal information.
- We don't tell data sources who you are. When you look up a company, our server fetches public information about it — from SEC EDGAR, Yahoo Finance, Nasdaq and similar public sources — using only the ticker symbol.
- We don't ask Google for anything beyond your email address.
Advertising
The free plan may show ads served by Google AdSense. Google and its partners use cookies to show ads, which may be based on your visits to this and other websites. You can turn off personalised ads in Google's Ad Settings, and learn more at how Google uses data in advertising or aboutads.info. Where the law requires it — including in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland — personalised ads are shown only with your consent. Pro subscribers see no ads, and the ad code isn't loaded for them at all.
Why we use it
| What for | Legal basis (where GDPR applies) |
|---|---|
| Running your account and your subscription | Performing our contract with you |
| Enforcing the free plan's limits, and preventing abuse | Legitimate interests: keeping the service fair and available |
| Understanding usage in aggregate — for example which companies are looked up most — to decide what data to improve | Legitimate interests: improving the service |
| Keeping payment records | Legal obligation |
| Personalised ads, where consent is required | Consent |
Who we share it with
Only with the service providers that run FairValueAnchor for us, each for the purpose described here:
| Provider | What they do | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| Stripe | Payments | Your email address and payment details (entered directly on Stripe) |
| Sign-in; ads on the free plan | Sign-in: what you approve on Google's screen. Ads: cookie data, as described above | |
| Neon | Our database (United States) | Everything we keep, stored on our behalf |
| Render | Hosting (United States) | Request data as it serves the site |
| An email provider, if emailed sign-in links are offered | Delivering sign-in links | Your email address and the link |
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect the rights and safety of our users or of FairValueAnchor. If FairValueAnchor is sold or merged, your information would pass to the new owner under this policy.
How long we keep it
| Information | Kept for |
|---|---|
| Your account | Until you ask us to delete it |
| Subscription records | For as long as you have an account; Stripe keeps payment records as the law requires |
| Usage records | 400 days |
| Free-lookup counts | 7 days |
| Emailed sign-in links | About a day after they expire |
Deleted information can remain in our database provider's recovery history for a short time before it's gone for good.
Your choices and rights
You can ask us to see, correct, export or delete the personal information we hold about you, or object to how we use it, by emailing contact@fairvalueanchor.com from the address on your account. We'll reply within 30 days. Deleting your account removes your email address and the usage records linked to it. Cancel any active subscription first, from Manage subscription on the plan page.
If you're in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, you can also complain to your data protection authority. If you're in California, you have the right to know what we collect, to delete it, to correct it, and not to be discriminated against for using these rights.
Children
FairValueAnchor isn't meant for anyone under 16, and we don't knowingly collect information from them. If you think a child has given us information, contact us and we'll delete it.
Where your information is kept
We store and process information in the United States. If you use FairValueAnchor from elsewhere, your information is transferred to the United States, with the protections our providers offer for such transfers.
Security
Connections to FairValueAnchor and to our database are encrypted. Sign-in links are stored only as hashes, your session cookie is signed, and we keep as little as we can. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect what we hold.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll post the new version here with a new effective date, and tell you on the site before a significant change takes effect.
